SETON HALL LANDS BARRETT
Rice High’s Andre Barrett, considered one of the best point guards in the country, announced yesterday that he has committed to play for Seton Hall.
The 5-foot-8 Barrett, who is entering his senior year, said he was impressed with Seton Hall coach Tommy Amaker, who visited a number of Rice practices last season.
“Coach Amaker did a great job of recruiting me,” Barrett said during a press conference at his Harlem school. “He pretty much knew my game inside and out. He wanted to push me academically. Not too many coaches [from other schools] spoke of academics.”
Barrett carries a 92 average and was inducted last spring into the National Honors Society. With an 870 on his SAT, he has surpassed the NCAA requirement to play as a freshman.
Besides his desire to play for Amaker, Barrett, 17, also picked Seton Hall in order to team with his friend Marcus Toney-El, a 6-6 star from Seton Hall Prep who committed to the Pirates last month.
Last season, Barrett averaged 13 points and 10 assists to help lift the Raiders to their second consecutive CHSAA and state titles.
Barrett had also considered UCLA, Connecticut, Kentucky, North Carolina, Clemson, St. John’s and Syracuse.
