SHAW: I’M STAYING WITH SJU
Willie Shaw will return to St. John’s for his junior season. He made that clear in a statement he released through the university yesterday.
As for what violation of team policy Shaw committed, which prompted coach Mike Jarvis to leave the former Kennedy star home for the NCAA Tournament, mum’s the word.
“I regret what has happened and respect coach Jarvis’ decision,” Shaw said in his statement. “I have spoken to coach and we have put this matter behind us. As far as we both are concerned the matter is closed and were moving forward.”
Shaw referred to the violation as a private matter and that’s how the university wants to handle it as well. The Post initially reported that Shaw had violated the team’s substance abuse policy. Several sources have confirmed that Shaw tested positive for marijuana.
Athletic director Dave Wegrzyn said the university does not discuss its substance abuse policy.
Sources close to Shaw and his family disputed that, saying that the swingman and Jarvis had engaged in a argument at practice over playing time. Players said they never witnessed such an incident, but confirmed that the team took a drug test about two weeks ago.
“I remember coach getting on Willie about something, but he was getting on everyone,” said one player. “We had a lousy practice.”
