Willie Shaw’s St. John’s career is all but over.
Sources told The Post that the university will drug test Shaw tomorrow. If Shaw tests positive for marijuana use, or another illegal drug, he will have played his last game in a St. John’s jersey.
Shaw was arrested along with former St. John’s star Marcus Hatten Tuesday night on possession of marijuana. Both men agreed to a plea in which the charges, a class B misdemeanor, would be dropped if they stayed away from legal trouble for the next six months.
This is Shaw’s second marijuana transgression. As reported exclusively in The Post, Shaw tested positive for marijuana in March of 2002 and was suspended for the Red Storm’s NCAA Tournament game versus Wisconsin and the first three games of last season.
St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis said at the time that it would be unlikely Shaw would remain with the program if he committed a second transgression. Shaw spent the subsequent offseason working with former St. John’s star Chris Mullin, a recovered alcoholic who counseled Shaw on the dangers of substance abuse.
Despite the second transgression, Jarvis was willing to keep Shaw on the team until he learned that the senior swingman had not been truthful will him about Tuesday’s arrest, another source told The Post.
“Mike feels like he went to bat for the kid and he’s really upset that wasn’t remembered,” said the source.
It will take about two weeks for St. John’s receives the results of the drug test.
One of the sources said that Shaw will be allowed to retain his scholarship so that he can complete his degree. But his playing days are over.
