HAINES CITY – The Yankees remain seduced by Gary Sheffield’s power and what he would do for them in left field and the middle of the lineup.

However, with Sheffield hiring super agent Scott Boras, the Bombers believe more so than ever that Sheffield is looking for a monster contract extension, and they aren’t interested in doing that.

“This has been about money from the start,” a club source said of Sheffield’s trade demand.

Boras told The Post yesterday that he got involved with Sheffield at the request of four of his clients, all Dodger pitchers, and that he doesn’t expect the Dodgers to deal Sheffield. The Dodgers have called the Yankees constantly asking what they would be willing to offer for Sheffield. Like a lot of other clubs, the Dodgers are very high on Alfonso Soriano.

“They wanted Gary in the middle of the lineup,” Boras said of his pitching clients who are led by Kevin Brown.

Boras said he didn’t plan on asking Dodger GM Kevin Malone for permission to talk to Yankee GM Brian Cashman about a possible deal; instead he wants Sheffield to focus on baseball.
