Replacement coach against replacement coach for the third straight game, the Islanders need this one to be the charm.
The Isles, with Brad Shaw at the helm, are coming off consecutive defeats by Lou Lamoriello’s Devils as they play host to the Penguins tonight, guided by Michel Therrien who replaced Eddie Olczyk.
Shaw stands 2-4 since he replaced Steve Stirling, and the Isles have dropped three straight. Shaw might start Wade Dubielewicz in goal tonight in place of Rick DiPietro, who was lifted during Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to the Devils.
The Penguins faced the Caps last night, trying to snap a 10-game losing streak. Last night was their first game since Mario Lemieux announced his second retirement Tuesday, this time because of a heart ailment that may require surgery.
Lemieux had three points against the Isles in a 5-1 Penguin triumph Nov. 3 in what was his last game at Nassau Coliseum. Lemieux, who previously retired in 1997, last played Dec. 16 and finished with 1,723 points, seventh all-time. Earlier this month, former Islander Ziggy Palffy also retired from the Penguins.
