Captain Patrick McEnroe revealed there’s a chance reeling Pete Sampras won’t be part of the U.S. Davis Cup team that faces France in the semis Sept. 20.

McEnroe, noting the event is on clay at Roland Garros and Sampras’ bitter slump, indicated he may be leaning toward rising American James Blake to take the second singles spot along with Andy Roddick.

If McEnroe chooses Blake over Sampras for singles, it would be an unprecedented maneuver to pass up Sampras when he’s been available.
