SMUGGLER BACK ON TRACK
Today is the next-to-last Saturday at the Big A spring meet, with racing moving to Belmont on May 3. Today’s feature, the 50th running of Grade 2, $150,000 Bed O’ Roses Handicap, marks the 4-year-old debut of last year’s champion 3-year-old filly, Smuggler, who won the Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks for Phipps Stable, then spiked fever at Saratoga and was put on the shelf for rest of year.
“She’s bigger and stronger than she was last year,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “I’m really looking forward to getting her started. Seven furlongs is probably not her best distance, but it should get her ready to run longer.” Edgar Prado has mount.
