David Robertson’s season is suddenly in jeopardy, as the Yankees reliever prepares for a visit this week to Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

The right-hander said yesterday that he recently has experienced elbow stiffness, which prompted an MRI exam on Sunday. Robertson would not divulge what the test revealed.

Before the Yankees beat Tampa Bay 3-2 last night, manager Joe Girardi said Robertson will be shut down until he returns from his consultation with Andrews. In 42 appearances for the Yankees, Robertson is 2-1 with a 3.29 ERA and has emerged as a trusted bridge to Phil Hughes.

“It’s a concern of mine because [Robertson] has been a huge part of our bullpen,” Girardi said. “His ability to get strikeouts is important. Right now it gives us a little less flexibility and less weapons.”

Robertson said the discomfort began about two weeks ago.

“I feel like I’ve been throwing the ball real well — it’s just a little discomfort,” Robertson said. “It gets tight on me the day after I throw.”

The solo homer Hughes surrendered to Jason Bartlett in last night’s eighth inning snapped a stretch of 12 1/3 scoreless innings by the right-hander, dating to Aug. 4 at Toronto. It marked only the fourth time in 34 relief appearances this season that Hughes allowed a run.

The Yankees will partner with Ed Randall‘s Bat for the Cure charity tonight by offering free prostate cancer screenings for any adult male attending the game. The free tests will begin at 3 p.m. and take place at the First Aid office located behind home plate.
