Jerry Bailey, who’s running away with the riding title at the Belmont spring/summer meet despite being sidelined for several days with a kidney stone, completed a sweep of the weekend’s grass stakes yesterday with a 51/2-length score aboard odds-on Rob’s Spirit in the Grade 3, $150,000 Lexington Stakes.

The victory by the 3-year-old son of turf champ Theatrical gave Bill Mott his 20th victory for the meet, putting him one ahead of Todd Pletcher in the race for the trainers’ title with a week to go.

Rob’s Spirit, making just his fifth lifetime start, was coming off a close second in the Hill Prince at Belmont June 17. Several lengths off the early pace set by loose-on-the-lead longshot Rumsonontheriver, he moved into striking distance on the far turn and easily took command when Bailey asked him down the stretch, running the mile and a quarter in 2:02.4 over a “soft” inner turf course.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better trip,” said Bailey, who won the New York Handicap on Saturday with Perfect Sting. “He’s got a great cruising speed and lets you sit him where you need to. He handled the going great. He’ll only get better.”

Rob’s Spirit paid $3.70. Plato, a European import making his first start in the U.S., rallied to complete a $21.60 exacta. Rumsonontheriver held for third.
