The United States made it to the Davis Cup semifinals, sweating out a tough victory by the top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan.
The Bryan twins beat Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco of Spain 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) yesterday in Winston-Salem, N.C., to give the U.S. a 3-0 lead in the best-of-five event.
BOXING: Calzaghe defends title
In Cardiff, Wales, Joe Calzaghe stopped Peter Manfredo in the third round to retain his WBO super middleweight title and improve to 43-0.
COLLEGE: Durant wins Wooden
Texas star Kevin Durant won the John R. Wooden Award in a runaway to become the first freshman to receive the trophy.
Candace Parker, the 6-foot-4 sophomore who led Tennessee to its seventh NCAA title, won the women’s Wooden Award.
NFL: No minicamp for Culpepper
Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper, who is still recovering from a second surgery on his right knee, said he won’t fully take part in the team’s minicamp next weekend, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Carl Edwards raced to his second consecutive NASCAR Busch Series victory, easily winning the Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway in Gladville, Tenn.
