SOCCER: RSL wins MLS Cup
Robbie Russell scored in the seventh round of penalty kicks and underdog, overlooked Real Salt Lake beat the star-studded Los Angeles Galaxy 5-4 on penalties for its first Major League Soccer title last night in Seattle.
Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando made two saves during penalties, and league MVP Landon Donovan missed badly over the crossbar giving RSL a chance in the extra rounds. After Rimando smothered Edson Buddle‘s shot, Russell beat backup L.A. keeper Josh Saunders into the lower left corner to set off a wild celebration. David Beckham scored for L.A. to start the penalty kicks.
COLLEGE: Iowa, Penn St. eligible for BCS bowls
Iowa and Penn State ended their seasons eligible for an at-large BCS selection, and Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech are also in position to become eligible for big-money bowl bids. The top seven teams in the BCS standings were unchanged from last week, with Florida, Alabama and Texas still in control of their destinies in the national title race.
* Thirty years after their NCAA battle reshaped college basketball, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were inducted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in Kansas City.
* Vermont defeated host Rutgers 77-71 in the Legends Classic. Mike Rosario had 22 points for the Scarlet Knights (2-1), who led by as many as seven twice in the second half. . . . In Athens, Ga., the Rutgers women’s team coughed up a 44-32 lead with 7:14 to play in a 49-48 loss to No. 16 Georgia.
* Princeton football coach Roger Hughes was fired after 10 seasons. He went 47-52, winning the 2006 Ivy League title.
GOLF: Westwood wins European money title
In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Lee Westwood became Europe’s No. 1 golfer after winning the Dubai World Championship by six strokes. Westwood shot a course-record 8-under 64 in the final round. He earned $1.25 million to overtake Rory McIlroy on the season-long money list.
* In Richmond, Texas, Kristy McPherson (67) took a one-stroke lead at 8 under in the LPGA Tour Championship before the second round was suspended because of darkness. Jiyai Shin is one shot back with two holes to play.
* Mark Brooks won the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational for a record third time, birdieing three of the last four holes for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler and D.A. Points.
TENNIS: Federer outlasts Verdasco
In London, Roger Federer overcame an erratic forehand to beat Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals. In the early Group A match, Andy Murray beat Juan Martin del Potro.
