FOOTBALL: Mangino settlement
Mark Mangino will be paid $3 million as part of a settlement both sides signed last week. The former Kansas coach resigned earlier this month amid allegations that he emotionally mistreated his players.
* Cincinnati announced the hiring of Central Michigan’s Butch Jones to replace Brian Kelly as its football coach. . . . Louisiana-Monroe hired former Army football coach Todd Berry as its new head coach.
* Charlie Frye was picked to start at quarterback over former top overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell for the Raiders’ game Sunday at Denver.
* Matt Simms, whose dad Phil was a Giants quarterback, signed with to play for Tennessee. The 6-3, 215-pound QB left Louisville after the 2008 season . . . California tailback Jahvid Best will not play in the Poinsettia Bowl as he continues his recovery from a concussion.
HOOPS: Mason Jr. still hamstrung
St. John’s basketball star Anthony Mason Jr. will miss at another three weeks as he recover from a severe hamstring injury suffered in the preseason. Mason was granted a sixth year of eligibility after missing almost all of last season with a soft tissue injury in his foot. — Lenn Robbins
