MLB: Reds to sign Cuban pitcher Chapman
Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman reportedly agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with the Reds. Yahoo! Sports was the first to report the agreement.
With a 100-mph fastball, Chapman is considered by scouts to be among the top pitching prospects in the world. Chapman, 22, defected last July, leaving the Cuban national team after it arrived in the Netherlands for a tournament. He then established residency in Andorra so he could choose his team as a free agent and not be subject to baseball’s draft.
* The Giants and first baseman Aubrey Huff agreed to a one-year contract pending a physical.
NFL: Dungy questions Rooney Rule
Recent minority interviews for NFL coaching jobs in Washington and Seattle under the Rooney Rule have raised questions whether the spirit of the rule has been violated.
Former Colts coach Tony Dungy wonders about the process used by the Redskins, who interviewed assistant coach Jerry Gray for the head-coaching position last month even though Jim Zorn still held the job.
The Seahawks met with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday amid reports that USC coach Pete Carroll would be hired regardless of how impressive Frazier was. Carroll reportedly has decided to resign from Southern California to take the job with the Seahawks.
* The Browns picked Eagles general manager Tom Heckert to be their new GM, according to a person familiar with the hiring. The Browns have been without a GM since George Kokinis was fired in November.
GOLF: Ogilvy wins season-opening SBS
In Kapalua, Hawaii, Geoff Ogilvy won the season-opening SBS Championship for the second straight year, this time having to rally on the back nine at Kapalua for a one-shot victory over Rory Sabbatini, who closed with a 10-under 63 despite missing a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole. Ogilvy took the outright lead with a fairway metal into the par-5 15th green for birdie, and he closed with a 6-under 67 on the Plantation Course.
* In East London, South Africa, Charl Schwartzel shot a 6-under 67 to win the Africa Open by one shot over countryman Thomas Aiken despite bogeying the final hole.
ETC.: Pacquiao to fight Clottey in Dallas
Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said the fighter will take on Joshua Clottey in a welterweight bout on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium. The fight was finalized after contentious negotiations for a megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. fell apart over a dispute over blood testing. It will be the first boxing match in the new stadium.
* In Haus Im Ennstal, Austria, Lindsey Vonn won a women’s World Cup super-G, becoming the first American to earn a victory on three straight days and the first women to do so since 1997.
* In Brisbane, Australia, top-seeded Andy Roddick survived to win the Brisbane International title, beating defending champion Radek Stepanek, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7).
* In Chicago, Jonas Hiller was spectacular in goal, making 42 saves in the Ducks’ 3-1 victory over the Blackhawks.
* Togo withdrew from a continentwide soccer tournament and its players reluctantly left Angola, two days after a deadly ambush on the team bus killed three and injured eight.
