NBA: Grunfeld: Arenas a Wizard next season
A day after Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house for bringing guns into the Wizards’ locker room, team president Ernie Grunfeld reaffirmed that Arenas will be back with the club next season.
“We’re not going to void his contract. As I’ve said all along, he’s going to be with us,” Grunfeld said. “Gilbert is a part of this organization, he’s part of our team, and he will be back with us next year. I think people forget that he’s still one of the best players in this league.”
* Mavericks guard Caron Butler was fined $25,000 by the NBA for directing inappropriate language toward fans.

In Memphis, Brittney Griner had 27 points and 10 blocks to lead fourth-seeded Baylor to a 77-62 win over top-seeded Tennessee and advance to the NCAA tournament regional finals. The Bears will face second-seeded Duke, a 66-58 winner over No. 11 San Diego State, tomorrow for a trip to the Final Four. . .. In Sacramento, Jayne Appel had 17 points and five rebounds while playing on a tender right ankle to lead top-seeded Stanford to a 73-36 win over fifth-seeded Georgia. The Cardinal will face No. 3 Xavier, a 74-56 winner over No. 7 Gonzaga, tomorrow.
HORSE RACING: ‘Mission’ statement
In New Orleans, Mission Impazible pulled ahead just past the 16th pole to win his first race as a 3-year-old in the $750,000 Louisiana Derby — a key prep for the May 1 Kentucky Derby. . . . In Florence, Ky., Dean’s Kitten took control at the top of the stretch and pulled away to win the $500,000 Lane’s End Stakes at Turfway Park. . . . In the United Arab Emirates, Gloria De Campeao won the $10 million Dubai World Cup in a photo finish, nosing out long-shot Lizard’s Desire to capture the world’s richest horse race.
GRID: Porter arrested for drunk driving
In Bakersfield, Calif., authorities say NFL linebacker Joey Porter has been arrested in Bakersfield on suspicion of drunken driving and accused of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.
* Miami-Dade police said Quentin Rashad Wyche, 22, had turned himself in to authorities, roughly 24 hours after the stabbing death of FIU running back Kendall Berry outside the school’s recreation center. Wyche was in training camp with FIU’s football team last summer, though his name does not appear on the team’s 2009 roster.
ETC: Kennedy in D’backs rotation
* Former Yankees prospect Ian Kennedy has impressed manager A.J. Hinch enough to earn a spot in the Diamondbacks’ rotation. * In Vestal, N.Y., the suspended coach of the Binghamton University men’s basketball team has filied a racial discrimination complaint against the school.
Kevin Broadus was put on paid leave in October after his starting point guard was arrested on drug charges and five teammates were dismissed for other violations.
* In Key Biscayne, Fla., American Mardy Firsh earned one of the biggest victories in his 10-year career at the Sony Ericsson Open, where he upset 2009 champion Andy Murray.
