HOOPS: Brooks top NBA coach
Thunder coach Scott Brooks was named the NBA’s coach of the year. Oklahoma City won 27 more games this season than it did a year ago, going 50-32 with the NBA’s youngest roster.
* Hofstra junior guard Charles Jenkins earned the Haggerty Award as the top player in the Metropolitan area for the second year in a row. He averaged 20.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game this season.
GRID: Drunk driving for Dillon
L.A. sheriff’s deputies say former NFL running back Corey Dillon was arrested for alleged drunken driving.
* The Vikings signed ex-Jet cornerback Lito Sheppard. . . . The Jaguars traded defensive end Quentin Groves to the Raiders for an undisclosed draft pick.
RACING: 4 women in Indy field
The Indianapolis 500 field has been announced and it includes four former champions as well as four women. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway says 40 entries have been filed for the May 30 race. Defending champion Helio Castroneves is joined by former winners Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon. Four women could start for the first time. The entries include Danica Patrick, Milka Duno, Sarah Fisher and Simona De Silvestro.
ETC.: Samaranch dead at 89
Juan Antonio Samaranch, whose 21-year term as president of the International Olympic Committee from 1980-2001 was marked by the unprecedented growth of the games and its biggest ethics scandal, died yesterday at a Barcelona hospital. He was 89.
* The U.S. soccer team will train for the World Cup at Princeton next month. . . . Venus Williams has decided not to play for the U.S. in the Fed Cup semifinals against Russia this weekend, joining her sister Serena on the sidelines. . . . Red Bulls forward/midfielder Mac Kandji will be out 8-12 weeks after breaking a bone in his right foot.
* Cruz Azul defeated fellow Mexican club Pachuca 2-1 yesterday in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final in Mexico City.
