MLB: Halladay outdueled by Pirates’ Duke
In Philadelphia, Zach Duke outdueled Roy Halladay with six strong innings, and the Pirates bullpen held on for a 2-1 win over the Phillies. Halladay (6-2) gave up nine hits in his fourth complete game of the season.
* In Cincinnati, Scott Rolen hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning off fading closer Trevor Hoffman and Joey Votto delivered an RBI single off the wall, rallying the Reds over the Brewers 5-4.
* In St. Petersburg, Evan Longoria drove in three runs and David Price pitched six strong innings to become the AL’s first six-game winner as the Rays beat the Indians 6-2.
* The Dodgers put star right fielder Andre Ethier on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right pinkie. . . . Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera appeared headed for surgery on his broken left forearm.
* Cubs manager Lou Piniella said right-hander Carlos Zambrano will return to the starting rotation from the bullpen.
NFL: Steelers have no word on Ben
The Steelers resumed their voluntary offseason workouts without suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He remains banned from attending, and there is no indication when the NFL will allow him to participate. “I’m waiting for word from New York like everyone else,” coach Mike Tomlin said.
* The Patriots released veteran cornerback Shawn Springs. . . . Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett apologized for posting an online streaming video of him taking a shower.
ETC.: Bol hospitalized in ‘critical care’
Former NBA player Manute Bol is hospitalized in the Washington, D.C., area with severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition. Sudan Sunrise director Tom Prichard said the 7-foot-6 Bol is in “critical care.”
* Big Ten Conference commissioner Jim Delany said any decision on whether to expand is “months away.”
* A federal judge dismissed Jeremy Mayfield‘s lawsuit against NASCAR, a ruling that presumably ends the yearlong saga surrounding the first Sprint Cup driver suspended for failing a random drug test.
