NFL: Peterson looks good to go for Vikes

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he was optimistic that running back Adrian Peterson (sprained right ankle) will be able to play against the Bills tomorrow after he practiced on a limited basis.

OBIT: Cubs great Ron Santo dead at 70

Ron Santo, one of the greatest players in Cubs history and a longtime WGN radio announcer devoted to the perennial losers, has died. He was 70.

Santo died in an Arizona hospital from complications of bladder cancer, according to WGN Radio. A nine-time All-Star in his 15-year career, Santo was regarded widely as one of the best players never to gain induction into the Hall of Fame.

GOLF: Tiger opens up 4-shot Chevron lead

In Thousand Oaks, Calif., Tiger Woods got off to a blazing start and played bogey-free in the second round at the Chevron World Challenge for a 6-under 66 to take a four-shot lead over U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell at 13-under 131 into the weekend of his final tournament of the year.

ETC.: Ex-Hall coach Gonzo to avoid record

Fired Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez was accepted into a one-year pretrial intervention program that will allow him to avoid a criminal record stemming from his shoplifting arrest.

* Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson said he didn’t appreciate some of LeBron James‘ words and actions on Thursday during the Miami star’s heated homecoming to Cleveland.

* The Red Bulls declined the contract option of Juan Pablo Angel, their career scoring leader.

* In Detroit, Austin Boucher threw a touchdown pass with 33 seconds left and Miami of Ohio (8-4) won the MAC championship with a 26-21 win over No. 24 Northern Illinois (10-3). . . . In Fresno, Calif., Ryan Colburn threw for three touchdowns to help Fresno State (8-4) beat Illinois 25-23 (6-6).
