BASEBALL: D-Backs deal for Galarraga
The Diamondbacks added depth to their pitching staff with a right-hander who was nearly perfect. Arizona acquired Armando Galarraga in a trade with the Tigers for minor league pitchers Kevin Eichorn and Ryan Robowski. Galarraga, 29, had an average 2010 season, but gained fame by missing a perfect game when umpire Jim Joyce acknowledged blowing a call with two outs in the ninth inning against Cleveland. . . . The Athletics traded right-hander Clayton Mortensen to the Rockies for minor league righty Ethan Hollingsworth. Oakland also announced it has agreed to terms with third baseman Andy LaRoche on a minor league contract. . . . Right-handed reliever Todd Coffey agreed to a $1.35 million, one-year contract with the Nationals. . . . The Giants agreed with 36-year-old right-hander Jeff Suppan on a minor-league contract.
NBA: Mavs sign Stojakovic
Peja Stojakovic used to pile up points against the Mavericks. Now they’re eager to see what he can do for them. Dallas signed Stojakovic off waivers in a bid to replace some of the scoring punch lost when Caron Butler went down with a season-ending injury. He has played only eight games this because of knee injuries, the last on Nov. 26. . . . Heat guard Dwyane Wade wore tinted glasses during practice yesterday as he continues recovering from a migraine headache. Meanwhile, Miami again worked out without forward Chris Bosh, whose recovery from a sprained left ankle is now entering a second week. Bosh’s status for the Heat’s next game, against the Knicks at the Garden on Thursday, remains unclear.
