HOOPS: Love extends streak
Minnesota forward Kevin Love, playing with a bruised left knee, had 16 points and 21 rebounds in last night’s 101-75 victory over the Pacers. It was his 52nd double-double in a row, surpassing Moses Malone for the longest streak since the ABA and NBA merged in 1976.
* The Lakers, winners of eight straight, invade Miami tonight to face the Heat, losers of five straight. Dwyane Wade said he’d like to see rotation changes and Chris Bosh said he would be demanding the ball more often down low.
* Devon Beitzel scored 13 of his 27 points over the final five minutes, helping top-seeded Northern Colorado (21-10) earn a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history with a 65-60 win over Montana (21-10) last night in Greeley, Colo.
MLB: Pat White retires
Pat White, the former star quarterback at West Virginia, told the Kansas City Royals that he is retiring from baseball. White, 26, signed a minor league deal with the Royals after being released by the Dolphins last September.
* Police reportedly were summoned to a Fort Pierce (Fla.) restaurant before Miguel Cabrera‘s DUI arrest last month because the Tigers first baseman allegedly threatened a manager and an off-duty fish and wildlife officer. The manager and off-duty officer reportedly told police Cabrera smelled of alcohol, insinuated he had a gun in a shoulder bag and said, “I know all of you, and I will kill all of you and blow this place up.”
NHL: Pacioretty concussion
Montreal forward Max Pacioretty is out indefinitely after he was diagnosed with a severe concussion and a fractured vertebra from a frightening hit Tuesday by Boston’s Zdeno Chara. Chara was given a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct, but NHL VP Mike Murphy said there won’t be a suspension. “I am upset and disgusted that the league didn’t think enough of [the hit] to suspend him,” Pacioretty told TSN.
ETC.: CTK, Rice advance
Corey Edwards scored seven of his 16 points in overtime as Christ the King booked its sixth consecutive trip to the CHSAA Class AA intersectional final, beating St. Raymond, 70-67, last night at Carnesecca Arena. CTK will face Rice, which beat Holy Cross, 55-52, in the other semifinal. Jermaine Sanders led the Raiders with 30 points. — Dylan Butler
