GOLF: Rory is ranked No. 3
Rory McIlroy rose to third yesterday in the world golf rankings, with Luke Donald and Lee Westwood occupying the top two spots, respectively. Tiger Woods was ranked 17th, his lowest standing since 1997.
* Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner was one of seven Met PGA pros who made the cut yesterday at the PGA Professional National Championship in Hershey, Pa. With rounds of 68 and 70, Kestner was seven shots off the 36-hole pace set by Kansas pro Sean Dougherty.
* Pat Wilson of Panther Valley fired a 4-under 66 to take a one-shot lead over Glen Cove’s Dylan Crowley after the first round of the Met Golf Association’s Ike Championship at Somerset Hills in Bernardsville, N.J.
SOCCER: Mexico ties with England
A 30-yard blast from Monica Ocampo gave Mexico a 1-1 draw against England in the Women’s World Cup in Germany. Earlier, a curling free kick from Aya Miyama sent Japan past New Zealand 2-1. The U.S. opens play in the 16-team tournament today against North Korea.
ETC.: Contract extension for Calipari
Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari received an extension that makes his contract worth $36.5 million and will keep him with the Wildcats through 2019. . . . Rafael Nadal said he will skip Spain’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against the U.S. in July, blaming his decision on the ITF for poor scheduling. . . . Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being sued by a Nevada man for allegedly directing his bodyguards to attack him at a Las Vegas casino last year.
* Fordham said baseball coach Nick Restaino will not return next season. The Rams, 31-23-1 last season, will immediately begin a national search for a replacement. . . . Joseph Cornacchia, co-owner of Kentucky Derby winners Strike the Gold and Go For Gin, died Sunday in New York. He was 78.
* Christian Walker, cleared to play with a broken wrist a half-hour before the game, scored from first base on two throwing errors in the 11th inning and defending champion South Carolina beat Florida 2-1 in Game 1 of the College World Series final in Omaha.
