GOLF: O’Hair triumphs in playoff

In Vancouver, Sean O’Hair won the RBC Canadian Open after tapping in for bogey on the first playoff hole yesterday, and then watching fellow American Kris Blanks lip out his bogey putt from just over five feet. It was the fourth PGA Tour win for O’Hair, but his first time in the top 15 during a season that had seen him miss 10 of 17 cuts coming into this event, and already fire a couple of Canadians — swing coach Sean Foley, who now works with Tiger Woods, and caddy Brennan Little. The 29-year-old O’Hair started the day three shots behind leader Bo Van Pelt before shooting 68 to get into the playoff with Blanks (70) at 4-under 276.

* In Walton on the Hill, England, Russ Cochran toasted a family victory at the Senior British Open, capturing his first major title with his son as caddie to maintain the US’ recent dominance of the tournament. With his 25-year-old son Reed carrying his bag, Cochran shot a second straight 5-under 67 in the final round at Walton Heath to win by two shots over compatriot Mark Calcavecchia. Ryan, the 52-year-old Cochran’s eldest son, was also present to witness his father’s first victory on this year’s Champions Tour — he was caddying for another American, Mike Goodes. Cochran became the eighth player from the US in the last nine years to win the Senior British Open.

* In Columbus, Ohio, Harris English became the second amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour this year, rolling in a 10-foot birdie on the last hole for a 1-under 70 to capture the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational.

* In Evian-les-Bains, France, Ai Miyazato won the LPGA Evian Masters, shooting a 2-under 70 to protect her two-shot lead and clinch her first title of the year. Miyazato played with consistency throughout the tournament, dropping shots on just five of 72 holes. Stacy Lewis of the US also shot a 70 to finish two shots back in second.

SOCCER: Uruguay wins Copa America

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Uruguay won the Copa America for a record 15th time after beating Paraguay 3-0 with two goals by Diego Forlan and another from Luis Suarez. Suarez scored in the 12th minute while Forlan hit the target in the 42nd and final minute of the match. The victory gives Uruguay its first Copa America title since 1995. The small country of 3.5 million also reached the World Cup semifinals a year ago, surpassing the performance of continental powers Brazil and Argentina. “This is not the most important thing in the world, but it is very important for the Uruguayans,” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. “It allows us to be united.”

NCAA: Nickname showdown looms

North Dakota political leaders are asking the NCAA to back off and let the state’s flagship university keep its Fighting Sioux name and logo, even at the risk of potential blacklisting and scorn by other universities and its own conference.

TENNIS: Fish wins in Atlanta

Mardy Fish beat John Isner in the final for the second straight year at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, earning a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory. . . . In Hamburg, Gilles Simon became the first Frenchman in 25 years to win the German Open, beating Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. . . . Vera Zvonareva beat Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-4 in an all-Russian final at the Baku Cup.
