MLB: Pirates fall in 19
Julio Lugo scored from third base on a disputed play at the plate, giving the Braves a 4-3 win in 19 innings over the Pirates. The game, which ended just before 2 a.m., was the longest in Turner Field history and matched the longest in the major leagues this season. At 6 hours, 39 minutes, it was the longest by time for both teams.
* Jered Weaver (14-4, 1.79 ERA) earned his eighth straight win as the Angels defeated the Indians, 2-1. . . . David Ortiz drove in five runs as the Red Sox ripped the Royals, 13-9. . . . Detroit’s Justin Verlander got his 14th win in a 5-4 win over the White Sox.
* The Reds traded left fielder Jonny Gomes to Washington for minor leaguers Chris Manno and Bill Rhinehart.
NBA: Rose to be sentenced
A judge is scheduled to sentence Jalen Rose today for drunken driving after the ex-Michigan star and NBA player crashed his vehicle on a suburban Detroit road in March. Rose, who told a judge that he had six martinis the night he crashed, pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
* The NBA’s Rookie Transition Program, an orientation to help rookies ease into the NBA’s demanding lifestyle, is the latest casualty of the league’s current labor strife. The program, scheduled for Aug. 9-11, has been postponed with no future date set. Since the lockout began July 1, the NBA has canceled its summer league and laid off 114 workers at its New York and New Jersey offices. — Fred Kerber

Cristian Pasquato scored in the first half and Juventus of Italy held off Mexico’s Club America 1-0 in a rain-delayed match in the World Football Challenge at Citi Field.
* American Ryan Lochte surged ahead of Michael Phelps, the defending Olympic champion, to win the 200-meter freestyle at the swimming world championships in China.
* Red Wings forward Kris Draper retired from the NHL yesterday after a stellar 20-year professional career that included winning four Stanley Cups.
