TENNIS: Djokovic gives in

Novak Djokovic‘s remarkable winning streak ended with a grimace, one that puts a new spin on the U.S. Open. The world’s top-ranked player was forced to retire in the second set because of a sore right shoulder, giving Andy Murray the championship at the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio. Djokovic, 57-2 this season, had won 16 consecutive matches since his only previous loss of the season in the semifinals against Roger Federer on June 3 at Roland Garros.

* Maria Sharapova beat Jelena Jankovic 4-6 7-6 6-3 to win the Cincinnati Open and install herself as one of the favorites for the U.S. Open. There were 16 breaks of serve in a topsy-turvy final, but Sharapova claimed her second title of the season and the 24th of her career.

The Giants placed closer Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with inflammation in his right elbow and recalled right-hander Steve Edlefsen from Triple-A Fresno. * The Angels scheduled a news conference for tomorrow, when the team is expected to announce it has agreed with pitcher Jered Weaver on a five-year contract. * Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata signed a six-year, $14.75 million contract extension through 2016 with three club options that could keep him in Pittsburgh through 2019. Tabata, 23, acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Yankees in 2008, is considered one of the cornerstones for the Pirates.

* The Padres retired the No. 51 worn by Trevor Hoffman, baseball’s career saves leader. Known for his menacing glare, high leg kick and wicked changeup, Hoffman had 601 saves in a career lasting from 1993-2010, 552 of them with the Padres.
