AUTOS: Johnson rolls in Kansas

Jimmie Johnson dominated Sunday at Kansas Speedway, going to the front early on and weathering a series of late cautions to hold off Kasey Kahne and win for the first time since April. The victory moved the five-time defending Cup champ into third in the Chase behind Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick.

* Sebastian Vettel finished third to wrap up the Formula One title at the Japanese Grand Prix. Jenson Button won the race, finishing 1.160 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso.

GOLF: Fowler tops McIlroy

Rickie Fowler won the OneAsia Tour’s Korea Open for his first professional title, closing with a 3-under 68 for a six-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy.

* Brad Faxon won the Insperity Championship for his first Champions Tour title when heavy rain washed out the final round at The Woodlands, Texas.

* Top-ranked Yani Tseng won the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, South Korea, for her sixth LPGA Tour victory of the season and ninth overall title of the year, shooting a 5-under 67 to edge Na Yeon Choi by a stroke.

* England’s Lee Slattery won the Madrid Masters for his first European Tour title, finishing with a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Gagl.

* Kirk Hanefeld won the Senior PGA Professional National Championship in Aldie, Va. Long Island pro Darrell Kestner of Deepdale tied for third.

ETC.: American hoopster dead

Chauncey Hardy, a 23-year-old basketball player who played collegiately at Sacret Heart in Connecticut, died yesterday in a Bucharest, Romania, hospital after being attacked in a bar. He played for CSS Giurgiu in southern Romania.

* Moses Mosop of Kenya set a course record (2:05:37) and Russia’s Liliya Shobukhova (2:18:20) won the women’s title at the Chicago Marathon,

* Minnesota forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL for high-sticking Columbus’ Matt Calvert in the face Saturday night.

* Tournament host New Zealand eased into the Rugby World Cup semifinals with a 33-10 victory over Argentina. New Zealand next faces Australia, an 11-9 winner over South Africa. France takes on Wales in the other semifinal in Auckland on Saturday.
