mlb: Shoulder lands Ellsbury on DL

The Red Sox placed center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury on the 15-day disabled list with a partially dislocated right shoulder before yesterday’s 13-5 victory over the Rays at Fenway Park.

Ellsbury injured himself sliding into second in Friday’s 12-2 win.

Once the game began, David Ortiz drove in five runs and hit one of Boston’s five home runs in the win.

Giants closer Brian Wilson likely is headed for surgery on his right elbow after an MRI exam showed structural damage and an issue with the ligament.

In Atlanta, Mike Minor pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning and the Braves survived a ninth-inning scare to beat the Brewers 2-1 for their fourth straight victory.

In St. Louis, Yadier Molina had two hits and two RBIs, leading the Cardinals to a 5-1 win over the Cubs.

In Washington, Edwin Jackson threw a two-hitter for his fifth career complete game as the Nationals won their fifth game in a row, 4-1 over the Reds

horses: Dullahan beats Hansen in Blue Grass

Dullahan ran down Hansen in the final furlong to insert his own name among the Kentucky Derby favorites in the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Dullahan went off at 3-1 odds, running the 1 ¹/‚ˆ mile on the Polytrack in 1.47.94 under Kent Desormeaux to beat the near white colt that was the center of attention before the race when his tail was partially dyed blue and later washed out. The margin of victory by 1 1/4 lengths.

Dullahan paid $8.40, $3.60 and $3. Hansen, at 6-5 odds, returned $3 and $2.60 while Gung Ho, at 31-1 odds, returned $9.20.

In Hot Springs, Bodemeister pulled away for a convincing 9 1/2-length victory in the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Bodemeister broke wide coming out of the gate, but quickly took the lead and never relinquished it, in the 76th running of the race, which is a major prep for the Kentucky Derby in May.

The finish was a spectacular outcome for trainer Bob Baffert, who also trains Secret Circle, who finished a distant second in the field of 11 3-year-olds.

The winner, with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard, paid $6.80, $4.60 and $3.60. Secret Circle, ridden by Rafael Bejarano paid $4 and $3. Sabercat ran third, paying $4.80, with Corey Nakatani aboard.

nba: Howard out with herniated disc

Magic center Dwight Howard, who has missed five of Orlando’s past seven games, officially is listed as out for today’s game in Cleveland with a herniated disc in his lower back. There is no timetable for his return.

In Minneapolis, Kevin Durant scored 43 points and Russell Westbrook had 35 to keep the Thunder atop the Western Conference with a 115-110 victory over the Timberwolves.

In San Antonio, Tim Duncan had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Suns 105-91 to clinch the Southwest Division title and stay a game behind the Thunder.

In Milwaukee, the Bucks lost to Indiana, 105-99 to fall 2 1/2 games behind the Knicks and Sixers for one of the last two playoff spots in the East.

golf: Pettersson has one-shot lead

In Hilton Head, S.C., Carl Pettersson had a run of five straight birdies on the front nine and finished with a birdie on the 18th hole for a 66 and a one-stroke lead over Colt Knost after the third round of the RBC Heritage.

In Lutz, Fla., Michael Allen shot a 4-under 67 to take a five-stroke lead after the second round of the Champions Tour’s Encompass Insurance Pro-Am.

In Kuala Lumpur, a thunderstorm suspended play at the Malaysian Open for the second straight day, with Masters runnerup Louis Oosthuizen holding on to a one-shot lead halfway through his third round.

etc.: Heat a worry for Boston Marathon

The organizers of the Boston Marathon are advising inexperienced runners and those with medical conditions not to run in tomorrow’s race because of temperatures that are expected to rise into the high 80s.
