GOLF: Dufner tops Els in playoff

Jason Dufner beat Ernie Els with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff in the Zurich Classic in Avondale, La. For Dufner, it was his first win in 164 starts on the PGA Tour. Luke Donald shot a 67 to finish third at 17 under, and move past Rory McIlroy for the No. 1 world ranking. Bubba Watson tied for 18th.

Stacy Lewis won the Mobile (Ala.) Bay LPGA Classic for her second LPGA Tour title, holding off 17-year-old Lexi Thompson by one shot.

Bernd Wiesberger of Austria shot a final-round 4-under 68 to earn his first European Tour victory at the Ballantine’s Championship in Seoul, South Korea.

Rosie Jones won the Legends Tour’s season-opening Walgreens Charity Classic, scoring a two-stroke victory over Elaine Crosby in the 36-hole event in Sun City West, Ariz.

TENNIS: Nadal reigns in Spain

Rafael Nadal became the first player in the Open Era to win two tournaments seven times after beating David Ferrer 7-6 (1), 7-5 in the Barcelona Open final.

Second-ranked Maria Sharapova cruised past top-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-4 to win her first title of the year at the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.

Top-seeded Gilles Simon beat Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-4, 6-3 to win the Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest, Romania.

AUTOS: Power prevails in Brazil

Australian Will Power won IndyCar’s Sao Paulo 300 for the third straight time, finishing ahead of Ryan Hunter Reay on the 2.5-mile, 11-turn Anhembi circuit. Takuma Sato finished third.

Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor won the rain-shortened Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP.

In Buenos Aires, world rally champion Sebastian Loeb won the Rally of Argentina for the seventh time in a row. The Frenchman finished 15.2 seconds ahead of teammate Mikko Hirvonen to give Citroen a 1-2 finish.

ETC.: Malignaggi wins WBA title

American Paul Malignaggi (31-4) stopped previously undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-1) in the ninth round to take the WBA welterweight title in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Brandon Inge agreed to sign with the Athletics. The third baseman was released by the Tigers on Thursday.
