NCAA: SJU, Jaspers draw first-round foes
St. John’s (37-21) will face East Carolina (35-22-1) on Friday at 1 p.m. in the opening round of NCAA baseball tournament. Also in the Chapel Hill (N.C.) regional are North Carolina and Cornell.
Manhattan (33-25) heads to the regional in Columbia, S.C., where on Friday the Jaspers will face South Carolina (40-17) at 4 p.m. Clemson and Coastal Carolina will meet at noon. All 16 regionals in the 64-team tournament use a double-elimination format. Florida was selected the No. 1 seed. The 16 regional winners move on to the best-of-three super regionals. Those eight winners advance to the College World Series, which begins June 15 in Omaha.
MLB: ‘Leo Nunez’ suspended eight weeks
Marlins pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, was suspended for eight weeks for age and identity fraud. He was caught playing under his fake name and spent the offseason in the Dominican Republic clearing up his immigration status.
NBA: Knicks to work out Sacre, Bost
The Knicks will continue pre-draft workouts today, highlighted by Gonzaga 7-foot center Robert Sacre. Other workout participants today are guard Dee Bost (Mississippi State), guard Covan Brown (Texas); forward Yancy Gates (Cincinnati); forward Troy Gillenwater (New Mexico State) and forward Wesley Witherspoon (Memphis). —Marc Berman
BOXING: Johnny Tapia dead at 45
Johnny Tapia, the five-time champion whose turbulent career was marked by cocaine addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law, was found dead Sunday at his Albuquerque home. He was 45. The death didn’t appear to be suspicious, police said.
Paul Williams, according to his manager, has been paralyzed from the waist down after being involved in a motorcycle crash Sunday morning in the Atlanta suburbs. Williams, who was scheduled to fight super welter-weight champ Saul Alvarez on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas, is expected to have surgery today.
ETC.: Loyola (Md.) wins lacrosse title
Loyola of Maryland beat the University of Maryland 9-3 to win the NCAA men’s lacrosse national championship in Foxborough, Mass.
Phil Mickelson has joined a group of investors who want to buy his hometown San Diego Padres. Mickelson said he is involved with Kevin and Brian O’Malley, and their cousins Peter and Tom Seidler. The O’Malleys and Seidlers are grandchildren of former Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley.
