RACING: Market Share wins Hambo

Hambo Day turned into Ladies’ Day, as trainer Linda Toscano won the 87th edition of the $1.5 million Hambletonian yesterday at The Meadowlands.

Toscano’s 3-year-old colt trotter Market Share (4-1), driven by Tim Tetrick, scored the neck victory over Guccio in 1:52 1/5. My Mvp was third.

“I refused to let myself even dream this far, it’s just unbelievable,” Toscano said.

Market Share took the lead at the top of stretch from 8-5 favorite Uncle Peter and held off a stiff challenge from both Guccio and My Mvp. At the wire the three colts were separated by less than a length.

Market Share ($10.80) also gave Tetrick his first Hambletonian victory.

It was bombs away in the $714,050 Hambletonian Oaks, as the top two choices went off stride clearing the way for 55-1 shot Personal Style to score the neck victory over Win Missy B.

CYCLING: UCI wants to oversee Lance case

Cycling’s international governing body is pressing its case for jurisdiction over the doping case against Lance Armstrong. In a statement released yesterday, the International Cycling Union (UCI) argues that it — and not the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency — is the authority that should handle the Armstrong case.

USADA officials disagree, and say that with so much corruption in cycling, UCI has a strong motivation not to reveal the truth.

ETC.: Calhoun fractures his hip

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun, 70, fractured a hip in a bicycle accident yesterday, hours before he was supposed to coach a group of his former players in a charity game.

* The Oklahoma City Thunder said it signed forward Daniel Orton, who appeared in 16 games with Orlando.
