TENNIS: Kvitova wins New Haven title
Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova enters the U.S. Open on quite a roll.
Kvitova beat Maria Kirilenko 7-6 (9), 7-5 yesterday to win the New Haven Open. It was the 22-year-old Czech star’s second WTA tournament title in three weeks.
GOLF: 15-year-old leads LPGA event
In Coquitlam, B.C., Lydia Ko, 15, took a one-stroke lead at the Canadian Women’s Open in her bid to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history, shooting an even-par 72.
In Snoqualmie, Wash., Tom Jenkins will take a three-shot lead into today’s final round of the Boeing Classic. Jenkins, 64, is trying to become the oldest winner in Champions Tour history.
ETC.: Romo leads Cowboys
In Arlington, Texas, Tony Romo threw for 198 yards with two long touchdowns to Dwayne Harris while playing only the first quarter, as the Cowboys beat the Rams 20-19.
In Oakland, Calif., Matthew Stafford threw for 68 yards until leaving with an injury to his non-throwing hand in Detroit’s 31-20 loss to the Raiders.
Steelers rookie right guard David DeCastro sustained a potentially serious right knee injury early in Pittsburgh’s 38-7 win over the Bills.
