NFL: No wrestling for Pacman
The Titans got a court order yesterday that prohibits suspended cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones from participating in wrestling.
Jones was scheduled to make his debut with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling tomorrow in a pay-per-view event titled “Hard Justice.”
Citing its contract with Jones, the team said it asked a Tennessee court to intervene in order “to protect our rights in this instance.”
Chancery Court Judge Robert E. Lee Davies agreed, saying Jones should be prohibited from “participating in any activities that ‘may involve the risk of serious personal injury.’ ”
* Rookie RB Kenny Irons of the Bengals will be out for the season after tearing a knee ligament during Cincinnati’s 27-26 loss to the Lions in Detroit. Irons, the Bengals’ second-round draft choice from Auburn, is expected to recover fully by next spring.
* The Jaguars signed free agent place-kicker Aaron Elling and waived rookie receiver Chris Jackson. Elling played with Miami, Seattle, Minnesota, Baltimore and Atlanta before signing with the Jaguars.
NHL: Isles sign Sutton
Locking up 6-foot-6 Andy Sutton, the top unrestricted defenseman still available, the Islanders last night continued their recovery from the hit they took in last month’s free agency.
Sutton signed a three-year deal to join Bill Guerin, Mike Comrie, Jon Sim and Ruslan Fedotenko as Garth Snow‘s responses to the departures of Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Richard Zednick, Viktor Kozlov, Sean Hill and Arron Asham, as well as the buyout of Alexei Yashin.
The 32-year-old Sutton, an eight-year NHL veteran, finished 19th in the league with 162 blocked shots, despite playing 55 games last season.
Sutton was 2-14-16 for the Thrashers last season and stands 27-78-105 in 432 career games with Atlanta, Minnesota and San Jose. – Mark Everson
* Forwards Mark Pandolfo and Jason Paige and goalie Dave Caruso signed AHL contacts with the Devils.
BASEBALL: Backman back
Former Met second baseman Wally Backman will get another crack at the South Georgia Peanuts.
Three days after the volatile manager resigned, the independent South Coast League decided Backman could return to the South Georgia Peanuts.
The league reinstated him, with a condition: Backman agreed to manage the Peanuts through the 2008 season. He can opt out of his contract only if he gets an offer to coach with a major league-affiliated organization.
* The Chicago Tribune, citing a major-league source, reported on its Web site that the Cubs claimed Scott Podsednik on waivers. The White Sox had two business days to work out a trade with the Cubs, simply let him go to the North Side team or pull him off waivers.
* Octavio Dotel was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain by the Braves. Dotel, acquired by the Braves from Kansas City on July 31 for right-hander Kyle Davies, was 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA in five games with the Braves.
* The fan who came up with Barry Bonds’ record-tying 755th home run ball is cashing in.
Adam Hughes, a 33-year-old plumber from La Jolla, Calif., said he was going to sell the souvenir through SCP Auctions. The minimum bid price has not been determined. The same auction house sold Bonds’ 700th homer ball for $102,000 in 2005.
TENNIS: Roddick ousted
Andy Roddick was bounced by third-seeded Novak Djokovic in a 7-6 (4), 6-4 loss while defending champion and top-seeded Roger Federer ousted Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup. Nikolay Davydenko, playing with a stress fracture and in the shadow of scandal, lost to unseeded Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-5. Federer will play Radek Stepanek in the semifinals.
GOLF: Women’s amateur
In Carmel Ind., Amanda Blumenherst, who led Duke to its third straight NCAA golf championship in May, beat her college teammate Jennie Lee 5 and 4 in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Blumenherst advanced to today’s semifinals at Crooked Stick Golf Club against 15-year-old defending champion Kimberly Kim, who beat Jennifer Song in 21 holes.
In other quarterfinals, Maria Jose Uribe of Colombia beat 2008 Duke recruit Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., 5 and 4. Fifteen-year-old Ha Na Jang of South Korea scored a 5 and 4 win over 12-year-old Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., the youngest player to get this far in the tournament’s 107-year history.
CYCLING: Discovery to disband
In Austin, Texas, citing fractious leadership in the sport, constant doping allegations and the struggles of finding a new sponsor, Lance Armstrong and the owners of his former Discovery Channel team said the squad will disband after this season.
