NFL: Bills stick with Losman
Quarterback J.P. Losman was selected as the starter for Buffalo’s game against the unbeaten Patriots this Sunday. Losman has led the Bills (5-4) to three straight wins, including three weeks ago against the Jets in a relief appearance after rookie starter Trent Edwards sprained his wrist. Edwards was inactive against the Bengals, but was the backup against Miami.
NHL: Stars fire Armstrong
The Dallas Stars fired general manager Doug Armstrong yesterday after a disappointing 7-7 start following a third straight exit in the first round of the playoffs. Brett Hull and Les Jackson were made interim co-general managers.
GOLF: FedEx Cup sets schedule
The FedEx Cup will be played on consecutive weeks starting Aug. 21 with the Barclays tournament at Westchester Country Club. After the Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship, the PGA Tour playoffs will take a two-week break to accommodate the Ryder Cup, set for Sept. 19-21 at Valhalla in Louisville. The Tour Championship will be held the following week at East Lake in Atlanta.
SOCCER: US hires Sundhage
Pia Sundhage was hired yesterday to coach the US women’s soccer team through the 2008 Olympics. She replaces Greg Ryan, whose contract was not renewed after the Americans finished third at this year’s World Cup.
TRACK: Coach loses lawyers
Trevor Graham, the elite track coach charged with lying to investigators in the federal government’s probe of steroid use in sports, has lost his lawyers. U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco granted a request yesterday from Graham’s defense lawyers to remove themselves from the case.
The government has accused Graham of lying in 2004 when he denied distributing steroids or telling his athletes where they could get them. He trained track stars Justin Gatlin, Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery.
