NFL: Skins ax assistants

The Redskins fired assistants Gregg Williams and Al Saunders yesterday, promoted Greg Blache to lead the team’s defense and announced that a head coach would likely not be in place for at least another week.

Washington also announced the hiring of Jim Zorn, who agreed to a three-year deal to lead the offense.

“The process of selecting a new head coach continues, although no hire is planned until after the Super Bowl so as not to distract from the championship game as well as to keep open all our options,” owner Dan Snyder said in a statement. It was his first public comments on a coaching search that began more than two weeks ago.

* The Browns have made contract offers to quarterback Derek Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis, key players they hope to keep off the free-agent market.

* New Falcons coach Mike Smith hired Terry Robiskie as team’s receivers coach.

NBA: Shaq: Left hip still hurting

Shaquille O’Neal said his sore left hip hasn’t improved since he was shut down from basketball-related activity several days ago, and that he isn’t sure if the planned two-week break from playing will be enough time for the joint to heal.

BLOTTER: Moon to enter plea on DUI charge

In Seattle, Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon will enter a plea Feb. 5 on charges of driving under the influence, court officials said.

The charges stem from an arrest Dec. 28, when a Medina police officer saw Moon’s vehicle on the Highway 520 Bridge at about 2 a.m. and noticed it had an expired registration tab, said Medina police Lt. Dan Yourboski. Moon had a valid Texas driver’s license, but his driving privileges had been revoked in Washington, Yourboski said.

The officer arrested the former Seahawks quarterback on suspicion of DUI. He was taken to a Kirkland police station, processed and released.

COLLEGE: South wins Senior Bowl

In Mobile, Ala., Andre Caldwell scored on a two-yard end around on the final play of the Senior Bowl to cap a 14-play, 86-yard final drive and lift the South to a 17-16 win over the North.

The Florida receiver took the handoff from his team’s former rival, Tennessee’s Erik Ainge, and plunged across the goal line. Caldwell celebrated with a Gator chomp.

Ainge, who was invited to the all-star game after Louisville’s Brian Brohm bowed out, completed 13-of-21 passes for 159 yards, all of it coming in the second half.

Michigan’s Chad Henne accounted for both North touchdowns with a 36-yard pass to Lavelle Hawkins of California in the first half and a 4-yarder to Missouri tight end Martin Rucker.

GOLF: The Barclays leaving Westchester

The first event in the FedEx Cup playoffs is moving to Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey, leaving Westchester Country Club in New York without a PGA Tour event for the first time in 40 years.

Under an amended agreement, The Barclays will return to Westchester at least once before 2012.

* Sweden’s Johan Edfors shot a 3-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Scotland’s Andrew Coltart after the third round of the Qatar Masters.

SKATING: McLaughlin, Brubaker win pairs title

In St. Paul, Minn., Keanu McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker, last year’s junior world champions, served notice they’re going to be a threat on the senior stage as well, winning the pairs title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Their overall score of 190.74 was more than seven points ahead of two-time U.S. champions John Baldwin Jr. and Rena Inoue.

SKIING: Sullivan wins downhill, Bode 7th

In Chamonix, France, American Marco Sullivan won the downhill to claim his first World Cup victory, while teammate Bode Miller finished seventh.

H.S. TRACK: Rodriguez sets mark in 600

Senior Nadonnia Rodriguez of Boys and Girls ran the fastest girls 600 meters in New York State this year, clocking 1:30.83 at the fourth annual PSAL Mayor’s Cup at the New Balance Track and Field center at the Armory.

LACROSSE: Titans lose

The Titans had a dominant first half against the Toronto Rock last night the Air Canada Centre, scoring eight goals to the Rock’s three. But the Rock had the better second half, outscoring the Titans 11-2 and winning the game 14-10. The loss brings the Titans’ record to 1-2.
