NFL: Saints player stabbed
Saints defensive end Charles Grant was stabbed in the neck, and a pregnant woman was shot and killed early yesterday in an altercation at a nightclub in southwest Georgia.
Grant was assaulted and had an injury to his neck, police said. He was treated at a local hospital and later released. No arrests have been made, and the case remains under investigation.
BASEBALL: Fehr eyes foreign visas
Union head Donald Fehr has heard rumors about the possibility U.S. authorities could deny or restrict work visas for foreign players mentioned in reports of use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Attending the Caribbean Series, Fehr said yesterday that the union will attempt to ensure foreign players are treated the same as U.S. citizens. Many major and minor league players from Latin American countries were mentioned in the Mitchell Report, including several from the Dominican Republic, and many others have been suspended under the major and minor league drug programs.
HOOPS: Lady Vol slams one home
Tennessee’s Candace Parker made her seventh career dunk and first of the season yesterday against Kentucky. The 6-foot-4 Parker chased the ball after Chante Bowman lost control of it at midcourt. She gained control at the baseline, turned around and dunked with 8:08 left in the game.
Parker dunked last season against Tennessee rival Connecticut, one of four last season. She also dunked twice in her freshman season against Army in the NCAA tournament. LSU All-American Sylvia Fowles is the only other women’s college player to dunk this season. Only six women have dunked in a college game.
GOLF: Webb wins Aussie crown
Karrie Webb won her fourth Women’s Australian Open title with a 10-foot birdie putt yesterday in Melbourne on the second hole of a playoff against South Korea’s Shin Ji-yai.
TENNIS: US match rained out
Steady rain washed out yesterday’s matches at the Fed Cup quarterfinal between Germany and the United States, forcing organizers to try again on today in San Diego. The best-of-5 series was tied at 1-1.
