BASEBALL: Fan hurt in plunge
A 25-year-old man suffered critical head injuries after falling about 150 feet down a stairwell at Turner Field during the eighth inning of last night’s game between the Braves and Mets.
Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said the man apparently fell from the club level to the landing on the stairwell on the field level.
Campbell said the man, whose name was not released, may have been sliding down the hand rails when he fell.
* Bartolo Colon made a solid return to the majors after recovering from an elbow injury, posting his first win since last June as the Red Sox beat the Royals 6-3 last night in Boston . . . Ricky Nolasco allowed only three hits over seven innings as the Marlins scored a 3-1 win over Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks. Webb (9-1) was bidding to become only the third pitcher since World War I to win his first 10 starts.
GOLF: Mickelson back to work
Phil Mickelson returns to the PGA Tour this week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. While he was off last week, he played himself in a scene shot for an episode of HBO’s “Entourage” scheduled to air later this year. Rory Sabbatini is the defending champ at Colonial CC.
NFL: Taylor, Dolphins at odds
The feud between Jason Taylor and Bill Parcells intensified yesterday, making it likely the six-time Pro Bowl defensive end has played his last game for the Dolphins. Coach Tony Sparano said Taylor isn’t expected to take part in any team activities through training camp.
The revelation came less than 24 hours after Taylor finished second to Kristi Yamaguchi in the finals of “Dancing With the Stars” in Los Angeles. For weeks the new Dolphins regime, led by Parcells, has fumed while Taylor spent his offseason focused on his budding Hollywood career.
COLLEGE: Red Storm ousted
Greg Miller hit a run-scoring double during a nine-run seventh and also had a two-run homer as Seton Hall (31-24) eliminated top-seed St. John’s (41-14) from the Big East Conference championship with a 12-6 victory yesterday in Clearwater, Fla.
Carlos Del Rosario hit a two-run homer in the sixth that put St. John’s up 4-1. Jeff Grantham had an RBI single during a two-run third for the Red Storm, who were outscored 24-6 in two tournament losses.
INDY 500: Helio shuns NASCAR
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves said yesterday he doesn’t plan to leave the IRL’s IndyCar Series for NASCAR any time soon.
The Brazilian driver, who will start fourth in Sunday’s 92nd running of the Indy 500, refuted a published report that speculated he would follow former IRL stars Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti to NASCAR as early as the 2009 season.
