BASEBALL: SWB wins league title
Phil Hughes gave up one run and struck out 12 in five innings and was given plenty of run support as the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees demolished Tampa Bay’s affiliate, the Durham Bulls, 20-2, to win the International League championship.
First baseman Juan Miranda led the Yankees’ hitting barrage, going 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs, and Chris Basak went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored.
SWB now moves on to the “Bricktown Showdown,” the annual Triple-A championship game between the winner of the International League and the Pacific Coast League. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday in Oklahoma City. The game’s MVP will take home the Bobby Murcer Award, honoring the Oklahoma native and Yankee legend.
MLS: Red Bulls look forward
The Red Bulls are doing more tonight than trying to stretch the six-game home unbeaten streak that is propelling them toward the playoffs. They’re trying to land a scorer by Monday to help them make noise when they get there.
“That’s our priority. A forward is the last piece of the puzzle,” Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said. “If we find the right guy and he produces, it could help us make a run at the MLS Cup.”
The Red Bulls are in position for a wild-card playoff berth but are returning from a winless two-game road trip to play host to Real Salt Lake, to whom they have never lost (1-0-5).
