NFL: Cards’ TE to miss playoffs

Cardinals starting tight end Stephen Spach is out for the playoffs with a torn knee ligament. Spach was injured during Saturday’s 33-13 rout of the Panthers.

* The Lions interviewed Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for their head coaching job for the second time.

* Former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, 32, was introduced as the Broncos head coach after signing a four-year deal to replace Mike Shanahan.

* Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer was arrested over the weekend after a disturbance outside a downtown Indianapolis nightclub.

MLB: Valverde, Hardy re-sign

Closer Jose Valverde and the Astros avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $8 million deal.

* The Brewers and shortstop J.J. Hardy agreed to a one-year, $4.65 million contract.

NCAA: Tebow has shoulder surgery

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow had surgery on his right (non-throwing) shoulder and is expected to be ready for spring practice in April.

* In Louisville, Terrence Williams had 24 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists as the 20th-ranked Cardinals (12-3, 3-0 Big East) ran by No. 12 Notre Dame (12-4, 3-2) 87-73 in overtime. . . . Host No. 6 Oklahoma (16-1, 2-0) overcame rival No. 11 Texas (12-4, 1-1) 78-63 in Big 12 action.

SOCCER: Red Bulls swap van den Bergh

The Red Bulls traded MF Dave van den Bergh – arguably their most valuable player last year – to Dallas for speedy Ghanaian F Dominic Oduro, first- and second-round draft picks and salary cap room. -Brian Lewis
