NFL: League settles with Stringer widow

The widow of Vikings lineman Korey Stringer has reached a settlement with the NFL over his heatstroke death during training camp in 2001. Under an agreement with Kelci Stringer, the NFL will support her efforts to create a heat illness prevention program.

* The Ravens promoted Greg Mattison to defensive coordinator, taking over the unit from new Jets head coach Rex Ryan. . . . The Panthers hired former Colts assistant Ron Meeks as their new defensive coordinator. . . . Former Ravens’ personnel director George Kokinis was introduced as the new GM of the Browns.

* Imprisoned NFL star Michael Vick is suing a former financial adviser for at least $2 million, accusing her of fraud, breach of contract, negligence and other offenses.

* Former Vikings great Carl Eller was convicted of assaulting a police officer who tried to arrest him last April. The 67-year-old Eller will be sentenced Feb. 23.

NCAA HOOPS: ‘Bama coach resigns

Mark Gottfried resigned as Alabama’s basketball coach, leaving in the middle of his 11th season amid criticism of the team’s play. The school said Gottfried will immediately be replaced by assistant coach Philip Pearson.

* Jerel McNeal had a season-high 27 points to lead No. 8 Marquette (18-2, 7-0 Big East) to a 71-64 victory over host Notre Dame (12-7, 3-5), which lost its fourth straight.

* Houston guard Aubrey Coleman will serve a one-game suspension for stepping on Arizona’s Chase Budinger during a game on Saturday.

MLB: Royals lock up Greinke

Right-hander Zack Greinke and the Royals agreed to a four-year, $38 million contract to avoid salary arbitration.

* Three-time All-Star first baseman Sean Casey planned to announce his retirement today.

NASCAR: Johnson has finger surgery

Three-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson underwent surgery to repair a tendon and nerve after cutting his left middle finger with a knife.
