NFL: Bucs add fired BC coach
Three weeks after being dismissed by Boston College for pursuing the Jets’ head-coaching job, Jeff Jagodzinski was hired yesterday by the Buccaneers to be their offensive coordinator.
* Fired as coach of the Chiefs last Friday, Herman Edwards joined ESPN as an analyst, the network announced. He will appear on several ESPN television and radio programs starting next month.
* Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has had a recurrence of cancer, this time in his spine, team officials said.
* Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett reportedly was fined $22,647 – which is one game check for next season – for a YouTube rap video, in which he uses derogatory terms for blacks and gays and brags about having Jerry Jones‘ money.
COLLEGE HOOPS: Georgia axes coach
Dennis Felton was fired as Georgia men’s basketball coach, one day after the team dropped to 9-11 and 0-5 in the SEC with a 26-point loss to Florida. Assistant coach Pete Herrmann will be the interim coach the remainder of the season.
* K.C. Rivers scored 29 points as No. 12 Clemson rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat host Virginia Tech 86-82. . . . In Iowa City, No. 9 Michigan State cruised past Iowa 71-56.
* In Brooklyn, Jaytornah Wisseh scored nine of his 28 points in the second overtime to lead LIU to a 91-88 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. . . . In Staten Island, Wagner dropped its fourth straight, 72-64 to Central Connecticut State. . . . In Fairfield, Conn., St. Francis of Brooklyn was drubbed by Sacred Heart 71-51.
NBA: Carmelo cleared to return
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony has been cleared by his doctor to play tonight against Charlotte. Anthony has missed the last 10 games with a broken bone in his right hand.
* Thunder guard Desmond Mason will miss the rest of the season after hyperextending his right knee on Wednesday night. . . . Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko is scheduled to have surgery today to remove a bone fragment from his right ankle. He is out indefinitely.
ETC.: Phil 11 shots back at FBR Open
James Nitties shot a 6-under 65 for a share of the first-round lead with Lucas Glover in the FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale. Local favorite Phil Mickelson was tied for 121st after shooting a 5-over 76 in his first round of the year.
