MLB: Glavine back with Braves
Ex-Met Tom Glavine has returned to the Braves, completing a $1 million, one-year deal that includes another $3.5 million in possible bonuses based on roster time.
The Braves announced the deal yesterday morning after a final round of talks with Glavine’s agent. The left-hander is baseball’s active wins leader with 305.
* Three-time All-Star second baseman Orlando Hudson and the Dodgers reached agreement on a one-year, $3.4 million contract. . . . Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was held out of spring training workouts for the second straight day with general soreness in his left shoulder. . . . Brian Roberts signed a $40 million, four-year extension with the Orioles. . . . Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and the Nationals agreed to a one-year deal for 2009, avoiding arbitration. . . . Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells will miss the World Baseball Classic, saying insurance costs got in the way of him joining Team USA.
NBA: LeBron nets 55 in win
LeBron James scored 55 points, coming up just one shy of his career high and putting together a stunning scoring flourish after halftime, and the Cavaliers beat the Bucks 111-103 last night. His career high of 56 came at Toronto on March 20, 2005.
* Amare Stoudemire could be finished for the season just days after the Suns decided not to trade him. Stoudemire, a starter for the West in last Sunday’s All-Star Game, underwent eye surgery and will not be able to resume physical activity for about eight weeks, the Suns said in a news release. . . . Celtics forward Kevin Garnett is heading back to Boston to be checked out by the team doctor after injuring his right knee against the Jazz on Thursday night. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Garnett was traveling yesterday, and his right knee strain was expected to be examined by Dr. Brian McKeon today. . . . The Pacers say guard Mike Dunleavy will be out indefinitely with a sore right knee. . . . Jazz owner Larry H. Miller has died from complications of type 2 diabetes at age 64.
TENNIS: Garrison claims racial discrimination
Former professional tennis player Zina Garrison filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the United States Tennis Association in Manhattan federal court yesterday.
The suit alleges, that it was because of her race that the USTA not only refused to pay her “an equivalent salary to that of white counterpart, Patrick McEnroe,” but also denied her a new contract with the Fed cup in 2007. Garrison was the captain of the U.S Fed cup team from 2004-08.
* In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Venus Williams beat younger sister Serena 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (3) to reach the final of the Dubai Tennis Championship. She will play Virginie Razzano in today’s final.
The WTA yesterday fined Dubai Tennis Championships organizers a record $300,000 after Israeli player Shahar Peer was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates.
* In Marseille, France, Novak Djokovic advanced to the semifinals of the Open 13 tournament by beating Mischa Zverev. . . . Top-ranked Rafael Nadal was picked to lead Spain against Serbia in the first round of the Davis Cup.
ETC.: Armstrong places 14th
In Solvang, Calif., Levi Leipheimer won the individual time trial in Solvang and added to his overall lead in the Tour of California, with teammate Lance Armstrong finishing 14th.
* In Los Angeles, Scott McCarron shot a 3-under 68 that gave him a two-shot lead over Steve Stricker and Tommy Armour III in the Northern Trust Open. First-round leader Phil Mickelson is three shots back.
* In Millington, Tenn., Kansas junior left-hander Shaeffer Hall threw the fifth individual no-hitter in Jayhawks history, striking out seven in a 5-0 victory over Air Force in the Service Academy Classic at USA Stadium.
* In Fontana, Calif., Brian Vickers won the pole for Sunday’s Auto Club 500, barely beating heavily favored Jimmie Johnson. But, about an hour after taking the sixth pole of his NASCAR Sprint Cup career with a lap of 183.429 mph, Vickers found out his team would have to change the engine in his No. 83 Toyota, sending him to the back of the 43-car field.
* Steelers kicker Jeff Reed has pleaded guilty to disorderly contest and criminal mischief after police say he broke a towel dispenser in a convenience store. Reed pleaded guilty to the two summary offenses, which are similar to traffic tickets. He was fined $543.50.
