NBA: Jordan headlines Hall class of 5

Slam-dunk inductee Michael Jordan was elected to the 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame class with David Robinson, John Stockton, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s coach C. Vivian Stringer. Induction is Sept. 10-12 in Springfield, Mass. “I don’t like being up here for the Hall of Fame because at that time your basketball career is completely over,” Jordan said.

* Spurs guard Manu Ginobili is out for the rest of the season and the playoffs. The Spurs said tests showed Ginobili had an increased narrow edema and stress fracture in his right ankle, which cost him 19 games earlier in the season.

COLLEGE: Arizona hires Xavier’s Miller

Xavier basketball coach Sean Miller accepted the job at Arizona yesterday. “I did my best to follow my heart,” Miller said. The 40-year-old Miller had a 120-47 record in five seasons at Xavier, guiding the team to the NCAA tournament four times, including a Sweet 16 run this past season.

* Memphis hired assistant coach Josh Pastner, 31, as successor to coach John Calipari. . . . Leonard Hamilton, considered a candidate for the Memphis job, is staying at Florida State after agreeing to a new five-year deal. . . . A Washington State official said the school has hired Portland State’s Ken Bone to be its new coach.

* Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden indefinitely suspended senior wide receiver Rod Owens after the player’s weekend drunk driving arrest.

NFL: Raiders sign veteran QB Garcia

Quarterback Jeff Garcia agreed to a deal with the Raiders. The 39-year-old Garcia, who spent the past two seasons with the Bucs, will presumably compete for the starting job with incumbent JaMarcus Russell.

* Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. agreed to a six-year contract extension with the Bucs, who acquired him in a February trade. ESPN reported that the deal was worth $36.1 million, the richest deal for a tight end in history.

* Free-agent linebacker Cato June signed with the Texans. . . . Cornerback Samari Rolle re-signed with the Ravens.
