MLB: Pena takes Pedroia’s All-Star spot

Rays first baseman Carlos Pena will take the American League All-Star roster spot of Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who withdrew to be with his pregnant wife. AL manager Joe Maddon said Toronto’s Aaron Hill will start at second in place of Pedroia. The addition of Pena means Tampa Bay’s entire infield is on the team, the first club to accomplish that since the 2002 Yankees.

The Brewers’ Trevor Hoffman will substitute for Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton (injured toe) and Pirates pitcher Zach Duke replaces Giants starter Matt Cain, who took a line drive off his right arm Saturday night.

* According to an Associated Press-Knowledge Networks poll, by a margin of 56 percent to 42 percent, fans said the All-Star Game shouldn’t be used to determine which league’s champion gets to open the World Series at home.

* The Red Sox honored Dom DiMaggio by dedicating the center-field flagpole to him and raising a banner with his name on it. The Boston center fielder and younger brother of Joe DiMaggio died May 8 at age 92.

HOOPS: Heat offer Wade contract extension

Dwyane Wade said he received a text from Heat president Pat Riley regarding a contract extension shortly after midnight yesterday, the first day the team could make such an offer. Wade said he will have more formal talks with the team later this summer.

* In Auckland, New Zealand, the United States broke an 18-year gold medal drought by beating Greece 88-80 to win the FIBA under-19 world basketball championships.

* The WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs fired coach Jenny Boucek, replacing her with GM John Whisenant.

ETC.: Ram breaks through in Newport

In Newport, R.I., Rajeev Ram beat third-seeded Sam Querrey, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3, in the Hall of Fame Tennis championships for his first ATP title. . . . In Budapest, Hungary, Agnes Szavay won the Budapest Grand Prix, rallying to beat Patty Schnyder 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

* In Glendale, Ariz., Mexico beat Guadeloupe 2-0 to win Group C in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Panama also advanced to the quarters with a 4-0 win over 10-man Nicaragua.
