GOLF: Pressel makes hers-tory
Morgan Pressel, at 18 years, 10 months and nine days, shot a 3-under 69 to become the youngest major champion in LPGA Tour history yesterday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Suzann Pettersen had a four-shot lead with four holes to play, but she went bogey, double bogey, bogey to fall one shot behind. She missed a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole and finished in a tie for second with Catriona Matthew and Brittany Lincicome.
* Keith Fergus shot a 70 to win the Ginn Championship by a shot over Mark O’Meara and Hale Irwin in Palm Coast, Fla. . . . Pablo Martin-Benavides became the first amateur to win the Estoril Open after shooting a 3-under 68 yesterday in Cascais, Portugal.
SWIMMING: Phelps breaks record
Michael Phelps smashed his own world record in the 400-meter individual medley by 2.04 seconds, breaking his fifth world record and becoming the most successful swimmer in world championships history. The 21-year-old American joined countryman Mark Spitz as the only swimmers to win seven golds at a major international meet.
TENNIS: Djokovic wins at Key Biscayne
Novak Djokovic beat qualifier Guillermo Canas 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in yesterday’s final of the Sony Ericsson Open at Key Biscayne, Fla. Seeded 10th, Djokovic will improve to a career-high No. 7 in the rankings today.
NBA: Wade nears comeback
Nearly six weeks after dislocating his left shoulder, Dwyane Wade said he will attempt to practice today with the Heat, his first attempt at a full workout since suffering the injury.
* Washington forward Caron Butler might miss the playoffs after breaking his right hand during yesterday’s game against the Bucks.
NASCAR: Johnson edges Gordon
Jimmie Johnson withstood teammate Jeff Gordon‘s bumping and banging for much of the last 53 laps and held him off by a front bumper to win for the third time in six NASCAR Nextel Cup races this year in Martinsville, Va.
