Cross another St. John’s coaching candidate off the list.

Siena coach Fran McCaffery, who interviewed with St. John’s A.D. Chris Monasch yesterday, will be the next coach at Iowa.

McCaffery was Seton Hall’s top choice, but when word spread that he was headed to Iowa, the Pirates hired Iona’s Kevin Willard.

So now St. John’s may zero in on former UCLA coach Steve Lavin, who is reportedly intrigued by the Red Storm and would consider leaving ESPN if he was offered the job. The Post reported today that the feeling is mutual.

Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt and Virginia Tech’s Seth Greenberg had already said thanks, but not thanks to St. John’s this week.

You can now add McCaffery to that list as he appears headed to Iowa to replace Todd Lickliter, who was fired by the Hawkeyes after three straight losing seasons.
