St. John’s athletic director Chris Monasch will interview former UCLA coach Steve Lavin Monday to discuss the Red Storm’s vacant head coaching job, The Post has learned.

Sources told The Post that Lavin, who was always on the Red Storm’s search list as, ”a unique candidate of interest,’ has told confidante’s he is very interested in the job.

“He’s just a guy who can fit in anywhere because he’s so smart and he has such respect for the game and the tradition of college basketball,” said a Big East coach who requested anonymity. “The guy asks a million questions because he wants to know everything about the game.”

St. John’s, which was rejected by Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt and never got to interview Seth Greenberg because he opted to remain at Virginia Tech where he received an extension and lucrative raise, is eager to find the right candidate and believe Lavin could be the man.

There is some skepticism on the grass roots level of city basketball because Lavin is a West Coast guy. But a source told The Post that Lavin knows the top recruiters in the Northeast and isn’t looking to pass himself off as a guy who knows the city.

“He’s not the classic St. John’s coach obviously,” said the coach. “But what he’ll do is he’ll come in and he’ll be open to everyone. He has no ego. He will engage everyone.”
