STARS WELCOME YOURI
The MetroStars officially introduced their prized acquisition, Youri Djorkaeff, yesterday at a Garden press conference. They can only hope he plays more like the star who won a World Cup with France and a UEFA Cup with Inter Milan than the 36-year-old who was one step away from retirement last month.
The veteran forward/midfielder is just the third World Cup-winner in MLS history, and one of the best players the league has ever signed. As GM Nick Sakiewicz gushed, “He’s won hardware everywhere he’s gone.” Djorkaeff scored nine goals as recently as last season for Bolton, but age and injuries are concerns.
After his short-term deal with Blackburn expired in January, Djorkaeff opted not to re-sign and said he knew then he wanted to a pursue a longtime dream: playing in New York, a city he loves and visits regularly.
“There were many options for me, but only one I was interested in. It was New York or nothing,” said Djorkaeff.
When asked why sign for a modest sum by European standards – the MLS max is $280,000, and he’ll make less – he said, “Dreams have no price. I’m like a kid. I’m (almost) 37, and I’m so excited.”
Djorkaeff, who missed three weeks earlier this season with a hamstring injury, was a key member of France’s 2000 European Championship team, and would join reigning MVP Amado Guevara in the league’s most dynamic midfield.
