THE usual suspects were taken into custody this past week with a nice array of bluefish, stripers, fluke and porgies coming over the rails.
The South Shore bays are loading up with snappers and blueclaw crabs, a fun way to spend the day with the kids.
In the New York Bight, Sheepshead Bay boats are picking away at the fluke from the MP Bridge in Jamaica Bay to the Tin Can Grounds and Ambrose Channel. There are bluefish inside Jamaica Bay and out to the Breezy Jetty. The Rockaway Reef is giving up porgies and sea bass.
Lots of action in the waters around City Island. Bluefish to 15 pounds are feeding on the bunker schools throughout the western Sound. The heat put down the bass action, but the porgy bite continues off Rye, Matinecock and over to Bayville.
Further east we hear from anglers that bluefish are on the feed in the Huntington area from Northport to Sand City.
There was some nice fluke action on the South Shore outside of Jones Inlet near the Hempstead Reef in 50 feet of water, and there also were fluke taken inside, from the inlet to the Meadowbrook Bridge.
Ocean water temps are on the rise as evidence of the mahi mahi taken at the Cholera Grounds.
The best offshore action has been at The Dip and Fishtails for longfin and yellowfin tuna.
Doormat fluke showed up in the waters off Fire Island Inlet in 60 feet of water with a number of 5-to-10 pounders being caught on some of the Captree party boats. Weaks and blues also are being taken in Great South Bay. You also can try Moriches Bay for good fluking, especially in the West Cut.
Anglers out of Shinnecock saw decent fluke fishing just west of the inlet, and the bass continue to hold near the Ponquogue Bridge.
Porgies, big and plentiful, are the topic along the North Fork and into Gardiners. There are weakfish at Jessups and bluefish from Cedar Point to Napeague.
Bass fishing was a bit of a struggle around the East End due to the heat, but surf jockeys took some on Montauk’s south side while bluefish were taken from the lighthouse to Shagwong.
Star Island Yacht Club is holding a mako/thresher tourney today and tomorrow.
On Aug. 16, the Fishermen’s Conservation Association will host a boating awareness event at the Great Kills Yacht Club on Staten Island. On hand will be the USCG as well as members of the Sandy Hook Pilots association.
The purpose of this event is to help promote safe boating in the New York Bite area. Both the pilots and the USCG will talk to everyone about the rules, regulations and safety issues in the region. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. with refreshments, door prizes.
