SUNY Albany’s men’s basketball team has declined to play a basketball game against Duke in North Carolina due to Gov. Cuomo’s executive order banning non-essential travel to the state because of its recently enacted LGBT laws.
Duke was supposed to play Albany on Nov. 12 as part of a Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament but a schedule released Wednesday showed no Duke opponent listed that day.
SUNY spokeswoman Holly Liapis said the cancellation was due to Cuomo’s order issued in response to a North Carolina law that opponents say can allow discrimination against the LGBT community.
Liapis said SUNY and its campuses continue to support Gov. Cuomo “on taking this stand.”
The North Carolina law enacted this year requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates. It also excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide anti-discrimination protections.
