Just a reminder – I’m on Twitter. Hope you come follow me.
And a quick note – I’m on vacation next week, so the blog will return a week from Monday. Set your calendars, folks. Set ’em.
Casual Friday here, so we’ll go the best supporting characters in sports movie history. This was trickier than you might have thought. Kept having more nominees, thanks in part to our much-appreciated crack staff. Anyway, here’s the top 10 – feel free to quibble:
10. Wilford Brimley (“Pops Fisher”) – The Natural. Beating out another coach/manager for the last spot – Robert Wuhl in Bull Durham. By the way, Bull Durham – as great as it is – doesn’t have a great supporting cast. It’s all Crash, Nuke and Annie.
9. Rip Torn (“Patches O’Houlihan”) – Dodgeball.
8. Nipsey Russell (“Ben Edwards”) – Wildcats. We finally got rid of the last of the peanut brittle. Riiiiiiiiiiiight.
7. James Earl Jones (“Terrance Mann”) – Field of Dreams. Tough to decide between him and Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe Jackson. Very tough.
6. Dennis Haysbert (“Pedro Cerrano”) – Major League. Tough to decide between him and Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle.
5. Kadeem Hardison (“Junior”) – White Men Can’t Jump. As I’ve said, tremendous scene-stealer — though I didn’t even know his name was Junior until I looked it up on IMDB.
4. Tom Hanks (“Jimmy Dugan”) – A League of Their Own. Classic.
3. Burgess Meredith (“Mick”) – Rocky. By the way, for whatever it’s worth, I’m not a huge Paulie fan. He didn’t even come close to making this list.
2. Bill Murray (“Big Ern”) – Kingpin. I had to be convinced that this was supporting. But it probably is.
1. Dennis Hopper (“Shooter”) – Hoosiers. The game he has to fill in as head coach for Norman Dale? Maybe my favorite scene in the movie. By the way, this is also the best sports movie of all time. But we’ll get to that another day.
