We’ve come to the end of the summer season for saltwater fishing and on cue came that chill in the air that will mean the start of the long fall run of bass and blues along the beaches.
Surf fishermen long for this time of the year when the big fish start feeding and those last two storms pushed a lot of bait fish and clams close to shore.
Those of you who would like to get a jump on the fall surf action should note that The Fisherman Magazine’s Annual Surf Fishing Show and Seminar, is slated to start at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Huntington Hilton (quarter mile south of the LIE on Route 110) on Long Island.
This show gets bigger every year. More than 50 surf-fishing related tackle manufacturers will be represented. This year’s format features an impressive array of surf-fishing experts and rod builders giving lectures and workshops.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 and over, and $10 for children 16 and under. For more info call (631) 345-5200 ext. 209.
Also mark on your calendar for Paulie’s Surf Fishing Tournament, hosted by Paulie’s Tackle Shop in Montauk which takes place Sept. 18-20. For info, call (631) 668-5520.
That one will be followed by the Montauk Surf Classic Sept. 25-27. The Classic kicks off at noon on the 25th, and continues through 27th at noon.
Serving as entry and weigh stations for this year’s contest will be Paulie’s Bait and Tackle and Johnny’s Tackle Shop.
For those not able to make their way out to the East End until the weekend, you can register in person at either shop until 10 a.m. on the 26th. The entry fee is $15 per angler.

New Jersey’s 18th Annual Governor’s Surf Fishing Tournament takes place Oct. 4 at Island Beach State Park and will be held rain or shine. Pre-registrations must be postmarked by Sept. 14, and adults save $5 by registering by the deadline.
If you are unable to pre-register by mail by Sept. 14 you can register on the day of the tournament beginning at 5 a.m. Fishing takes place from 6:30 a.m. till 1 p.m. on the ocean side of the park only.
