After a lengthy battle with cancer, Stuart Scott is dead at 49, and the sports world is in mourning.

The longtime “SportsCenter” anchor enlivened the world with tried-and-true quips, catchphrases that became less his and more the world’s as they entered the lexicon. Even in dark sports times, he leavened the moments with humor, a talent that was perhaps best on display in the classic “This is SportsCenter” commercials.

Like Scott, they brightened days and offered a relief from the same, staid Way Things Are. Viewers aren’t supposed to seek out and laugh at advertisements; before “SportsCenter,” viewers weren’t supposed to seek out and laugh at TV anchors.
